Change Your Perspective, Change Your Life

Change Your Perspective, Change Your Life

autumn girl photographerLife is about making choices. Even idly standing while it passes you by is a conscious choice, although at times it might not feel that way. Choosing to be in the moment is an all too important part of actually feeling alive, like the days aren’t just blending into one another. One of the easiest ways to cultivate mindfulness is to actively take stock in whatever moment you happen to find yourself in. Often time’s people believe that mindfulness can only be achieved through dedicated meditation sessions, where you repeat a mantra, and practice deep breathing exercises. And while there is something to be said for having that time with yourself, most of us are mostly trying to not be in survival mode 24/7. Which is why this morning as I was standing outside of my gym waiting for the bus to take me to work, I closed my eyes. Instantly I felt all of the noises around me dull somewhat, and what I could hear were less the sounds of punishing urban jungle decibels but the signs of people all around me living. I felt alive. The gentle sound of leaves rustling in the chilly autumn air, the whirring of automobiles, ever so often punctuated by the faint chirping of a hidden bird. I breathed the cool, refreshing air deeply, thanking the universe that I was in that moment exactly where I was supposed to be, with the ability to use my senses to experience the world around me. I couldn’t help but smile once I opened my eyes again, because everything was exactly as it was a few minutes before, but the sensation of wonderment had transformed the ordinary into extraordinary, and merely standing around waiting for the bus became one of the highlights of my entire day. It might seem a bit silly at first, and sometimes, the hardest part is just deciding that you are going to be present. There will always be the next song on your phone, or a new post to glue your eyeballs to on Facebook, so take the ear buds out, put your phone back in your pocket, and just be. You will truly grow to appreciate how those minutes that used to disappear scrolling through endless feeds are reclaimed towards your journey to true happiness.
